Chapter 6
What he got from the survivor Moira was that Isolabs was worse than he had expected. For a company priding itself on taking care of people, it sure had issues with payment and the general treatment of the workers. Unpaid overtime, abusive managers, but worst of all, the safety precautions were discarded to cut the costs.
She had breathed in fumes that had left her lungs permanently damaged, the blast marking her with chemical burns that reminded her of the accident every day. And her only benefit from the whole thing? She was fired and paid hush money that barely covered the medical bills.
âWe tried to sign a petition. You know, to make our voice heard by those who could do something about Isolabs. But they had that lawyer, and you know how everybody loved him.â
Oscar didnât need to ask for his name to figure out whom she was talking about.
He drove back to the station, comparing the similarities between Devon, the politician, and Alan, the lawyer. Both were successful through shady contacts. Both were dead as a result of shady contacts. How it all connected to the vigilante group was something Ava thought about the entire time she was in that cell.
Every now and then, Oscar would feed her their newfound information. When she heard about the witnesses practically being non-existent, it filled her with relief. Oscar had run by her just this morning when there were fewer people around to tell her about their discoveries with Alan. Turns out, she had been right all along.
It was all good news until Chief himself showed up at her cell and unlocked her handcuffs, his expression grave. She was led into his office, a place she was quickly coming to dread.
He motioned for her to take a seat, and once she did, he began talking, his eyes trained on his desk as if the words he wanted to say were embossed in it.
âThe public has found out about your involveme- â
âI was never involved,â Ava hissed, interrupting Chiefâs sentence.
Chief nodded.
âWell, the public certainly thinks you do. So let me be frank with you. They think that weâre protecting you. That makes them trust us less, and with the investigation going on about the vigilante group, we donât want the public to turn to them for help. Do you understand what Iâm trying to say?
âYouâre kicking me out,â Ava whispered in realization. Her chest suddenly felt tight, and she looked around the office, blinking back her tears.
âItâs not like that. Itâll only be for two weeks, but youâll have to hand in your badge and gun.â
A price to pay for her freedom. Silently and without letting Chief say anything more, she placed her items on his desk and let herself out. When her hand reached the door handle, she turned to Chief and walked back towards him. Pointing to the handcuffs on the table, she held out her wrists to him and gestured at her cell.
Chief waved his hand. âOscar came by with some good news.
